IMPROVING YOUR CHILD'S EDUCATION
by Cynthia Hurley,
Board of Directors Frisco Arts

COUPLE61

Sigh. I'm not an artist. My attempts at drawing and painting were not well received, my singing voice is weak, and I was a wee bit too independent in my early years for piano lessons.

But I adore the arts, and I know that I want my son to develop the same love for art, theater and music that I have. Why are the Arts so important for my son, and why are the Arts so important for all of our children?

Take a look at what Americans for the Arts, a national non-profit supporting Arts programs, found in a recent study:

Studying Arts improves children's overall academic performance
* Children who participate in Arts programs score higher on standard achievement tests
* The Arts teach children to be more tolerant and open and boost their self-confidence
* The Arts develop skills such as critical thinking, creative problem solving, effective communication, and teamwork, and better prepare our students for college and the workforce.

Arts programs in our community don't happen by themselves, but they take a real love and dedication from the artists, our city and our teachers. Frisco Arts needs the support of those of us, like myself, that want the Arts to enrich our communities and help our children blossom.

What can Frisco citizens do to help the Arts in our community?

1. Join Frisco Arts or volunteer for Frisco Arts at www.friscoarts.org . Frisco Arts helps our local arts organizations with funds and support, and planning for the first Frisco Arts Festival is underway. We absolutely need volunteers and the support of our community!
2. Get involved with the Arts of Collin County project. A local venue is essential for our artists and will attract many larger performances to our area, aiding our arts growth and boosting our local economy. www.artsofcollincounty.org
3. Get involved with your child's art programs at school. Not only is the Fine Arts program in Frisco is outstanding, but our teachers need our support! www.friscoisd.org/schools/finearts/index.htm
v Get involved with our Frisco Public Art program. Have you noticed the dedication that the City of Frisco has taken to bring art to our community? Take a look at the sculptures along Preston Road, visit an Art in the Atrium exhibit, and pay attention to the beautiful art works at our public buildings and parks, all made possible by the City of Frisco. www.friscotexas.gov/projectsprograms/publicart/pages/default.aspx
4. Find one or more arts groups in Frisco that you love. Support them with your time, membership and attendance! You can see some of our local organizations at www.friscoarts.org/html/community.html .

My advice: Get your children involved too. Your community, and your children's education, is what you choose and commit to make of it. I'll be out there - - please join me!!!

Cynthia Hurley is the Vice President of Frisco Arts, an attorney with the firm Jordan, Houser and Flournoy, LLP---and most important, she is a mother.

"Who is Frisco Arts?"

Frisco Arts is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit, community based organization formed by citizens and business leaders and serves as a vital agent and community partner in supporting and promoting the arts in Frisco. Frisco is a young and growing community, and Frisco Arts recognizes that the arts are an important tool for educational, economic and community development. Frisco Arts was recently designated the Local Arts Agency for the City of Frisco through a resolution by the City Council.

In 2008, Frisco Arts hosted over 300 art related events at our facility at 6827 Main Street. More than 3,000 people attended these events. In addition, we also provide grants, scholarships, and sponsorships to a variety of local art groups who bring art to the citizens of Frisco.
